In eleven years of making portraits, I have heard every reason there is to do a photoshoot for yourself — and I have watched what happens to a person between arriving at one and leaving it. This is not a small thing. It is one of the more quietly transformative gifts you can give yourself.
Here are 5 reasons to do a photoshoot for yourself
1. It rebuilds something a mirror cannot
A portrait session is not vanity — it is a celebration, and for many of my clients it is a turning point. There is a particular confidence that arrives when you see yourself photographed with intention: well-lit, well-directed, entirely yourself. It sets a tone. It makes the self-regard you have been meaning to practise suddenly feel deserved.
2. Your public face deserves better than an old selfie
Your profile images are working for you every day — on LinkedIn, on Instagram, on the CV, in the pitch deck. If the portrait representing you is five years old, it is telling a five-year-old story. A considered set of portraits refreshes every surface where the world meets you, all at once.
3. Portraits belong on walls
Somewhere along the way we decided that hanging a portrait of yourself in your own home is vain. I call nonsense. For centuries, a professional portrait — painted or photographed — was something you sat for at least once in a life, and it hung in the house without apology. Bring the tradition back. If it is good enough for royalty, it is good enough for you.
And consider this: a portrait is a historic record. One day, when the people who love you go looking for images of you, what will they find?
4. It teaches self-value — to you, and to everyone watching
Investing in a portrait of yourself is a declaration that you are worth documenting. Accepting yourself — as you are, the way you look today — is one of the harder pieces of work a person does, and this is a surprisingly effective place to practise it. You are as worthy of a beautiful photograph as anyone you follow.
5. It is permission to be spoiled
You deserve a portrait here and now. Not five kilograms from now, not once you own the right outfit, not when a milestone forces the occasion. Life is short and the little black dress at the back of the wardrobe is not wearing itself. Book the makeup, wear the heels, and let the session be the occasion.
Unsure what to wear? Styling guidance is part of how I work — we plan your looks together before the shoot, so you arrive knowing you are dressed for the story you want to tell.

Your reasons to do a photoshoot for yourself are already there
Every person I photograph walks out differently to how they walked in — shoulders a little more open, and a gallery of proof that they are worth documenting. If you are ready to explore your own reasons to do a photoshoot for yourself, look through my portrait portfolio for inspiration, or head straight to the booking page and tell me your story.
There is no wrong time to do this for yourself — no milestone required. Sometimes the best reasons to do a photoshoot for yourself are the quiet ones: wanting to feel like yourself again, marking a chapter only you know you have closed, or simply deciding that being seen is overdue.
